Which candidates do we support?

The LOHV is a strictly non-partisan organization, and has endorsed candidates running on the Democratic, Republican, Green, and Working Families Party lines. We endorse candidates strictly on their expressed commitment to work with us on passing legislation to protect animals, and for incumbents, on their record on these issues.

November 3rd Election, 2009: Results

Well, the results are in. Regrettably, all of our judicial candidates and two of our municipal candidates were defeated in this election. We hope they'll try again when the opportunity to run presents itself again — because we stand behind our belief that they were the right candidates for Pennsylvania and our local municipalities. We congratulate the winners — and especially our victorious candidate, Mayor Rick Gray — and look forward to working with those in office to improve Pennsylvania's reputation throughout the nation (and thanks to many of the atrocties our state laws still allow) and the world.

Mayor of Lancaster City
Rick Gray, incumbent (D) WINNER !!
The League's support of Mayor Gray goes back to his being the catalyst to the end of crow poisoning. His predecessor, Charlie Smithgall, had signed on to the ill-conceived plan to kill crows with a dangerous toxin (DRC-1339) as a means to remove them from undesirable roosting locations throughout Lancaster City and surrounding townships. Mayor Gray took office before the second year of poisoning began, and decided that the City would not continue to be involved, and that there had to be a more intelligent and humane way to manage the crows. His decision created unrest within the rest of the participating townships, and with the help of Supervisor Heidi Wheaton, a coalition to humanely and safely manage the crows was formed.
